The Director

Dr. Ellen Denham is a distinguished director known for her innovative and thought-provoking work in both opera and experimental theater. Her directing journey began with bold, experimental projects at the Indy Convergence arts residency, where she quickly became known for her ability to blend the boundaries of traditional performance with the experimental. Dr. Denham has since been recognized as a finalist and semi-finalist for the prestigious American Prize for Stage Directors (Charles Nelson Reilly Prize), a testament to her creativity and dedication to pushing the boundaries of stagecraft.

Her recent directing endeavors include the world premiere of Olivia’s Ocean for TAMU-CC Opera and Amahl and the Night Visitors for Music on Site, Inc.. These productions reflect her commitment to developing fresh, compelling narratives that resonate with audiences. During her doctoral studies, she honed her directing skills by serving as Assistant Director for mainstage operas such as Orpheus in the Underworld and The Merry Widow at the University of Illinois, where she cultivated a deep understanding of traditional opera while experimenting with new artistic directions.

In 2013, Dr. Denham was invited to direct the Umbrella Project as part of the Indy Convergence residency. This groundbreaking work explored the concept of Otherness and was created collaboratively with performers using dialogue, dance, and a live soundscape of voices and instruments. The piece was an embodiment of her approach to theater and opera, where collaboration, improvisation, and raw human expression are at the forefront.

Her body of work also includes a comic soundscape based on internet memes, as well as explorations into various methods of incorporating improvisation into opera. Her unique approach to stage direction has earned her two grants from the Indiana Arts Commission for her collaborative projects, showcasing her ability to foster creativity in others.

A passionate advocate for the development of collegiate opera programs, Dr. Denham has presented on “Challenges and Solutions for the Developing Collegiate Opera Program” at the National Opera Association National Conference, where she shared her insights on shaping the future of opera education.

Through her work, Dr. Denham continues to challenge norms, break down barriers, and inspire the next generation of performers and theater-makers.
