Canoeing

Went on 14 mile canoe trip, thinking that with all the recent rain, water levels would be great in Southern Indiana, right? Wrong. The water was low, so a trip that usually takes us 4-5 hours with a leisurely pace and long lunch break took us 5 hours of hard paddling with about a 10 minute stop to throw the various picnic items into two bags so we could munch in between rowing. What are fun rapids at high water level, at lower levels mean you get stuck on rocks and have to push off.I was eating grapes, and decided that for every scrape (canoe touching a rock), I'd eat a grape. Well, it rhymed anyway. At one point after a long riffle, I declared "that was a 20-grape scrape!"We saw little green herons, which was a wonderful treat, turtles by the dozens, ducks, and the weather was great. If only there weren't so many darn rocks. By the end of the trip, my muscles were screaming. I hope I can move my arms tomorrow.I love canoeing and would do it again, but next time if I knew the water level was that low, I might opt for the 7-mile trip.
