The revision process
Did I ever mention that I hate revisions? It's not that I think my first drafts are perfect--far from it! But there are so many directions I could take a piece in that often it's hard to choose, especially after receiving critiques which represent a multiplicity of views.I got some great feedback on a story at TNEO this past summer and am finally getting around to the revision process. Several people had wonderful suggestions on how to take the story in a slightly new direction or ratchet up the tension. I liked the suggestions, but some of them didn't feel quite right. The best revisions, I think, happen when I don't literally follow a great suggestion, but use it as a springboard for something even cooler. I think I may have just found that. Here's hoping I'm right.
