Kayaking and Writing (not at the same time)
My biggest fear in purchasing a kayak was that it would be too cumbersome to lug around, or I wouldn't have time or make time to use it frequently, and that it would end up being an expensive dust collector in the garage. Of course, I've only had it since April 1, so I don't have much data to go on.But currently it is my favorite toy ever and I expect I will get a lot of use out of it this summer. I've taken it out three times on Eagle Creek Reservoir and yesterday, I stayed out for more than an hour and came in somewhat reluctantly. I absolutely love being out on the water and seeing all the birds. A bald eagle circled overhead a couple of times, I passed by about 10 blue herons, some of which took off while others ignored me, and saw lots of cormorants and geese. I'm pretty sure I saw a loon once, but it dove under and I didn't see where it resurfaced. I definitely heard a loon. Though I've hiked trails in the area frequently, you get a completely different perspective on the water. I've learned to appreciate the effect of wind on a small craft. I never used to pay much attention to the wind speed on my iPhone weather app, but by golly, I do now!I'm getting better at putting the kayak on top of my car and getting it tied down on the foam blocks. I probably will buy an honest-to-goodness roof rack at some point. Carrying it from the car to the water is still a little painful, but I manage. Sitting in it is so comfortable, because I can sit with my legs extended and knees just slightly bent, which is the single most comfortable position for me now with my knees not quite what they used to be. I feel a small burn in my shoulders and biceps today, but nothing I can't handle. We'll see how I hold up when I go for my swim at the gym later today.I'm making progress in the new novel, Antonia's Fire and wrote 1,000 new words yesterday. I really need to do more research, but I think some things will just have to be added in later drafts. I hope to write 1,000-2,000 more words today and do some research.I received word a few days ago of acceptance of my short story, Good Kitty, by a small press, Inwood Indiana for an upcoming anthology, and should have more details next month.I'm looking forward to the end of the semester and having more time to write. And kayak!
