Samuel Barber Recital

In November, I sang a group of Samuel Barber songs on a recital featuring his music at Earlham College, where I teach voice. The recording came out quite well. My accompanist, Carol Lou Woodward, was wonderful to work with. I'm never 100% pleased with a performance of mine, but I feel pretty good about this one. I put it on my website in MP3 format, though there is no link to it yet from my main web page. This is the song "Nocturne," the fourth song of four songs Op. 13. The text is below. Enjoy!Nocturne by Samuel Barber, performed by Ellen Denham, soprano, and Carol Lou Woodward, pianoNocturneText from "Carnival" by Frederic Prokosch (1908-1989)Close my darling both your eyes,Let your arms lie still at last.Calm the lake of falsehood liesAnd the wind of lust has passed,Waves across these hopeless sandsFill my heart and end my day,Underneath your moving handsAll my aching flows away.Even the human pyramidsBlaze with such a longing now:Close, my love, your trembling lids,Let the midnight heal your brow,Northward flames Orion's horn,Westward th' Egyptian light.None to watch us, none to warnBut the blind eternal night.
