From amvhowardThis is how it works: Comment on this entry and I will give you a letter. Write ten words beginning with that letter in your journal, including an explanation what the word means to you and why, and then pass out letters to those who want to play along.I got...N1. Night is a beautiful thing. Everything looks more mysterious in the dark, or more peaceful, depending on the situation. Night is a wonderful time for thinking, or for sleeping.2. Never is a word I should avoid. When discussing a white stain on the bathroom floor and how it got there, my husband theorized that I got toothpaste on the floor. "I never get toothpaste on the floor!" I replied. Though I believe I was correct about this, I know that using the word never was a mistake, as tomorrow morning, I may very well get toothpaste on the floor.3. Naan is my favorite thing at Indian restaurants, with lots of spicy onion chutney. In fact, as I write this, I am thinking that it has been a while since I have been to the Indian restaurant. Naan is a flatbread served warm fresh out of the oven and it is indescribably delicious.4. Nelle is my first name spelled backwards. When I was a child and wanted to be a writer (some things never change, or they come back to haunt us later), I decided that I would write under the pen name of Nelle Mahned. I thought it was cool that my name backwards still looked like it could be a name. This is not true for my middle name, Louise = Esioul. Though even that could possibly be a name somewhere in the world. Perhaps an African country once colonized by France?5. Negligent is what I have been lately about certain things in the house, like laundry. Opera rehearsals play havoc with my schedule!6. "Now is the best time to be alive," proclaims the cheerful song sung by the characters on Disney's "Carousel of Progress." I think that we no longer live in a time of faith that technology will continue to make our lives better and better.7. Necromancy is something in which the evil wizard in my novel has probably dabbled. I only know this because of a journal entry he wrote claiming that he was run out of one town as a "desecrator of corpses." I have not speculated much about this because it is not very relevant to the novel.8. Nudity is generally not acceptable on stage in an opera. Thus, the four supernumeraries who tempt the hero of Turandot are wearing skin-colored leotards and tights. I think at one point the idea was to have these painted to fake nudity, but since then they have been also covered with silver mesh bikinis. This works too. Fortunately for me I get to wear a good bit more than they do.9. No is a word I am learning to use more. I realize that just because I have a hypothetical blank spot on my calendar does not mean I need to fill it with work. Though I am going to be rushing around for the next few days because I said "yes" to singing in a wedding on Saturday (in between opera performances!) and a service on Tuesday evening I will have to run to at the last minute from another commitment.10. Nine is my favorite number. I suppose I should have put this for entry number 9. I like it because it contains three threes, and because I learned a trick in elementary school for multiplying nines. If you hold all ten fingers out, and want to know what four times nine is, for example, you hold down your fourth finger from the left. Then, to the left of it, you have three fingers up, and to the right, 6. So 4 x 9 = 36! Try it, it works!
