Sick cat

Yesterday morning, I noticed that Varda's (in userpic) face was swollen on one side, so I immediately called the vet and took her in. Her eye had been a little watery on that side for a couple of days, but I didn't think anything of it. The vet found, as I suspected, an abscessed tooth. As I also suspected, he told me that with her kidney function as poor as it is, anesthesia is risky. So he gave her a shot of antibiotics and sent me home with a prescription for liquid antibiotic to give her twice a day, to see how that does before considering surgery. I took her home and gave her a generous portion of wet food, which she seemed to eat ok. She didn't seem to be in any obvious pain.Well, by the time Stephan got home, she was having trouble breathing out of her nose on that side and making a sort of snoring sound, and the swelling had gotten worse. We decided to take her to the emergency vet clinic where E. works. Thank goodness for family members who can treat your animals! She took Varda's temperature, which was normal, and checked her teeth. The vet came in and looked at her, and said she wasn't likely to get better without taking the tooth out. He went ahead and offered the choice of immediate euthanasia, which I was completely not ready for. I know she is old and sick, but I would rather try to get rid of the tooth that is causing the problem, clean up the infection, and hope she can survive all of that. If not, well, we tried our best. E. brought us the forms to sign, and I signed the option "do not resuscitate" if she doesn't wake up.She's scheduled for the surgery this morning and I'm having trouble concentrating on anything. I've known for some time that she's sick and not likely to live much longer, but now that we have reached a crisis situation, the possibility of losing her has hit me pretty hard. I don't work till the afternoon, fortunately.ETA: I got a call from the vet and Varda made it through the surgery, with two teeth removed and a lot of pus. Her kidney numbers are worse and her while blood count is up (due to the infection), so they want to keep her there and on fluids for 36-48 hours. I'm relieved, though still cautious not to get too excited, since she's still very fragile given her age and the condition of her kidneys. I hope we can bring her home tomorrow.
