Local network and more introspection

For Indy folks: a former student of mine sent me a link to this local networking site - SmallerIndiana.com which is something like a facebook (I'm going by what they say since I've never been on facebook) for local folks to chat and exchange information. I signed up and immediately joined a group for writers, one for musicians, and one called "smaller food" where people talk about local restaurants and locally produced food. It looks pretty cool so far, though I think the main activity that goes on is businesspeople and entrepreneurs discussing strategy and networking and so forth. In the introspection department, I decided that for a lot of us artistic types who do something related to our art for a living, we (meaning me) tend to expect to get fulfillment mainly from our work. This may be a mistake. Don't get me wrong -- I'm thankful every day that I get to do what I love and am passionate about for a living. But I used to think that if I could just make a living from music, I didn't really need anything else to be fulfilled. I worked seven days per week for years before I realized I could give myself a day off. I didn't try very hard to get involved in social activities, because I knew I didn't have time anyway and was always working in the evenings and on weekends when most people were free.Well, as I've done more teaching during the day in recent years, I'm finding myself with an occasional evening free. This year, I'm resolving to get out more and try different activities. Last night, I went to a Contra Dance for the first time this year. I'd like to go hear more live music when I'm not performing. There's a local fantasy/science fiction club that I've never been to. Time to get out and try some new things!
